Previous The Process

Vinyl Wall uses the MovieStuff Video CineMate-20 S8/R8 Telecine Machine (www.moviestuff.tv) for flicker free video scans.

The CineMate-20 is designed for super high quality scans of regular 8mm and super 8mm film to NTSC video at a real time speed of 20fps. Though Super 8mm (and most regular 8mm) film was ostensibly shot at approximately 18fps, transferring at 20fps looks normal, plays smoothly and is flicker free; something not possible at 18fps due to conflicts in video scan rates and projector blade configurations. The CineMate-20 uses a low heat, diffused 40 watt light source for full frame even light with no “hot spots”. All metal film surfaces are polished and all mechanicals cleaned and lubed. The CineMate-20 has a maximum capacity of 400 feet.

The CineMate-20 offers full frame viewing via an enlarged gate and the ability to scan right off the emulsion of the film via a jumbo 5 inch condenser lens. This specially modified projector shows more of the film image that usual -- a lot more. The nice part about this technique is that many images of people who would normally be 'cut off" -- on the edges of the film -- are 'not so cut off" using this method. The bad side of this technique -- in a widescreen environment -- is that you will see film abnormalities that would normally be cropped -- like ragged parts of the space between frames at the top of the film -- usually with original camera lint -- and you may see "THE [sprocket] HOLES". However, using this technique, you can rest assured that heads, etc., that may look "cut off" on their NTSC TV really were "cut off" in the original film. We can scan "more traditionally" upon special request. However, we do put the burden of request upon our clients. [There are many post scan "digital" techniques -- like letter boxing or zooming -- that can be applied in a non-linear environment to "clean up" the raw footage in the widescreen world.]

This is a serious “transfer” unit which produces an end result that has a flicker free image that is sharp corner to corner with no hot spot and clarity once reserved for only the highest priced professional transfer houses.
